Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day

Come to the Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day on the Allegrippis Trail system at Raystown Lake on Saturday, October 4, 2014! Participants are to meet at the Pine Picnic Shelter in the Seven Points Recreation Area of Raystown Lake at 9am. It is a bring your own bike (and helmet) event (BMX bikes welcome) and is hosted by the Raystown Mountain Biking Association. Parents must stay for the duration of the event and are welcomed to ride. Waivers are needed for each attendee. Helmets are required. Water and light refreshments on hand. There will be several group rides for kids ages 7-15 lead by members of RMBA and other friends of the trail. All rides leave by 9:30am.

Do not miss this event! It will be a great day of spectacular views and fantastic mountain biking!

4th Annual Walktoberfest 5K Walk/Run on the Lower Trail

Fall Foliage Weekend at Greenwood Furnace State Park

Come and enjoy the fall colors the weekend of October 11 and 12 at Greenwood Furnace State Park. The Blacksmith Shop will be open from Noon to 4 pm each day. Come and view the progress on the restoration of the Charcoal Wagon.

On Saturday at 1 pm, take a fall foliage hike with David Harmon on Brush Ridge. This is one of our best areas to see up close the flaming colors of autumn. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes, and bring a snack and a bottle or two of water. The hike will be up to 2 miles in length, and about 1 hour in length.
On Sunday at 2 pm, come for a special presentation on the use of tracking bloodhound dogs led by Brian Baker. When someone is lost, time is of the essence. Whether it’s a lost child, missing hunter, or runaway criminal, tracking them quickly can make the difference between life and death. Sometimes the best way to track is with bloodhounds, which are excellent tracking dogs. A mock rescue demonstration by local search and rescue teams will be part of this program.

Juniata College Observatory Nights

The Juniata College physics department is again starting its “Observatory Nights” from September 29 to November 24. On each scheduled night, students and visitors from the community are invited to Juniata’s Paul Hickes Observatory to use several powerful telescopes to observe a variety of celestial objects, which will vary with the seasons. The Hickes Observatory is behind the Brumbaugh Academic Center, reachable by driving north up Mifflin Street and driving onto the gravel drive behind the center. Parking is available. The observatory is reachable by walking up the hill.

Each observatory night will be on a Monday from 8-10 p.m. The dates are as follows: Sept. 29, Oct. 13, Oct. 27, Nov. 10 and Nov. 24.

Beaky emphasizes that visitors and students should dress for the current weather conditions. The observatory is open to the weather. Observatory Nights may be canceled in the event of clouds, rain or snow. Beaky will cancel by 5 p.m. on the scheduled day. On the Halloween Trail, children (and their families) are led by guides to five different sites along the trail with costumed characters that help children be nature detectives and learn about the natural history associated with Halloween, like why we use images of owls, spiders, corn stalks, and pumpkins during this time of year. The Shavers Creek forest comes alive throughout the weekend with a community Fall Festival that includes pumpkin carving, face painting, music, entertainment, activities, natural history programs, crafts, great food, and the Childrens Halloween Trail! On the Halloween Trail, children (and their families) are led by guides to five different sites along the trail with costumed characters that help children be nature detectives and learn about the natural history associated with Halloween, like why we use images of owls, spiders, corn stalks, and pumpkins during this time of year. Admission to the festival is free. Admission to the Halloween trail is $5 (ages 4 and up), Free (Ages 3 and under).

Juniata College Observatory Nights

The Juniata College physics department is again starting its “Observatory Nights” from September 29 to November 24. On each scheduled night, students and visitors from the community are invited to Juniata’s Paul Hickes Observatory to use several powerful telescopes to observe a variety of celestial objects, which will vary with the seasons. The Hickes Observatory is behind the Brumbaugh Academic Center, reachable by driving north up Mifflin Street and driving onto the gravel drive behind the center. Parking is available. The observatory is reachable by walking up the hill.

Each observatory night will be on a Monday from 8-10 p.m. The dates are as follows: Sept. 29, Oct. 13, Oct. 27, Nov. 10 and Nov. 24.

Beaky emphasizes that visitors and students should dress for the current weather conditions. The observatory is open to the weather. Observatory Nights may be canceled in the event of clouds, rain or snow. Beaky will cancel by 5 p.m. on the scheduled day. To check whether there has been a cancellation, go to http://www.juniata.edu/astronomy/. If large groups of 10 or more visitors would like to come to the observatory, contact Beaky at 641-3550 or beaky@juniata.edu.
