Is there some fungus among us? You Bet! Join local mushroom expert Bill Russell on Saturday, September 1 at 7:00pm at Greenwood Furnace State Park as he takes us on a hike to look for mushrooms. Following the hike, he will show some slides on varieties of mushrooms.
Bill Russell has been giving mushroom programs, workshops, and hikes for over 35 years. Bill has published a book called Field Guide to the Wild Mushrooms of Pennsylvania and the Mid-Atlantic, which is useful to the novices and experienced wild mushroom hunter. Due to popular demand, the Huntingdon County Chamber of Commerce will once again be offering the China Adventure. The trip will begin April 4, 2013 with a flight directly from JFK International Airport to China and includes bus transportation to JFK, round trip air transportation, 4 and 5 star hotels, three meals each day and sightseeing. A deluxe tour bus, fluent English-speaking tour guides and entrance fees are included. A workshop to gauge public interest in revitalizing downtown business districts will be held on September 27, 2012 at 7:00 PM at the Huntingdon County Career and Technology Center in Mill Creek. The session is being developed jointly by the Huntingdon County Chamber of Commerce and the Huntingdon County Planning and Development Department. According to County Planning Director, Richard Stahl, who chairs the Chamber�s Main Street/Community Improvement Committee, �Our traditional downtowns are a largely untapped resource for economic development.�

This workshop is an outgrowth of a February presentation by Bill Fontana of the Pennsylvania Downtown Center. Mr. Fontana outlined a vision of vibrant and attractive downtowns throughout the Commonwealth. The Chamber Main Street/Community Improvement Committee has proposed a Regional Main Street Concept as a means of revitalizing downtowns throughout the County. The Main Street Concept, developed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, includes four major points: 1. Economic restructuring, 2. Appearance, 3. Promotion and 4. Organization.

The workshop will outline the Regional Main Street Concept, and will provide an opportunity for the audience to develop their vision for downtown revitalization. It is designed for elected officials, business owners, community organizations and people who care about their community. There is no charge to attend the workshop. Join the Friends of the East Broad Trop Railroad for their Fall Reunion on October 5, 6, 7. What may be the only train to operate over the slim-gauged tracks of the East Broad Top Railroad in2 012 will be the feature of this event. The EBT railroad will be operating center-cab diesel M-7 with several cars on Saturday October 6th exclusively for FEBT members who register forthe Fall Reunion. The train will operate from Orbisonia to Colgate Grove and return at sunset.

The $40 registration fee for members is an all-inclusive ticket to all of the events going on including the banquet meal and the train at sunset to Colgate Grove. Registration is on-site only and will be open Friday October 5th from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at the Rockhill Trolley Museum Pavilion. On October 20, 2012, the sixth annual Scott Grugan Memorial 5K Trail Run/Walk and 1 Mile Walk/Run will honor of Dr. Scott Grugan, former chief radiologist at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, who died tragically in 2005. Dr. Grugan was not only a wellrespected physician and member of the Huntingdon community, but also an avid runner and fitness enthusiast. In particular, Scott enjoyed running the trails of the Flag Pole Hill Trail System, where the race will be held. The race course lies high above the town of Huntingdon. Along the route, runners and walkers will be able to enjoy the beautiful views of Huntingdon’s fall foliage. The 5K course will also include Juniata College’s renowned “Peace Chapel,” designed by Vietnam War Memorial architect Maya Lin. All proceeds raised will benefit the Scott Grugan Memorial Fund, the Huntingdon Health and Wellness Association and the Juniata College HOSA Chapter to further promote healthy living in our community.

Come to the Earthen Art workshop by Diahann Mosier at the Art Space on Sunday, November 4 from 2pm-4pm! The Huntingdon County Arts Council teamed up with this local artist for another Earthen Art workshop. In the tradition of environmental art installations by Andy Goldsworthy, Diahann Mosier will give a brief presentation of the concept of environmental art, and then lead a walk to create some personal works of art in the Huntingdon neighborhood. The non-permanent creations will be photographed and participants will have the opportunity to discuss their work at a later session. Participants may bring their own cameras, or have Diahann Mosier photograph their creations.

Toots and the Maytals are considered legends of ska and reggae music. Their sound is a unique, original combination of gospel, ska, soul, reggae and rock. Frederick “Toots” Hibbert, the leader of the group, was born in May Pen in the Parish of Clarendon, Jamaica. He was the youngest of seven children. He grew up singing gospel music in a church choir, but moved to Kingston in 1961 at the tender age of sixteen.

The band recently won the 2005 Grammy award for best reggae album True Love, an album consisting of re-recorded versions of their classics alongside popular and legendary musicians such as Bonnie Raitt, Willie Nelson, Eric Clapton, and Keith Richards, as well as popular artists today such as No Doubt, Ben Harper, The Roots, and Shaggy.

Toots and the Maytals remains a relevant influence on today’s global music scene with artists from Amy Winehouse to Sublime re-recording classic tracks. A wide variety of ceramic artists from across the United States will display traditional and sometimes startling work in experimental styles in the exhibit "Cub Creek: Tenth Year Anniversary Exhibition," which will be on display at the Juniata College Museum of Art from November 15, 2012 through February 16, 2013.

Included in the Juniata exhibit is a work by Jack Troy, professor emeritus of art at Juniata College. Troy has participated in the foundations exhibitions and has taught workshops at the foundation's studios. Other artists included in the show are , Jessiman, Steven Glass, Chris Gustin, Val Cushing, Chuck Hindes, Josh Manning, Dan Molyneux, Ron Myers and Hitomi and Takuro Shibata.

Anita Roseborough is an acoustic guitarist and singer with over 30 years experience performing as a solo artist and a group vocalist. Anita plays a blend of cover music from the past five decades with a focus on contemporary folk and rock. Her singing style has been likened to those of folk artists Joan Baez and Judy Collins. She has performed in a wide array of venues in regions throughout Huntingdon County. Participate in Pennsylvanias Fat Bike Only Weekend from Friday, January 18 to Sunday, January 20, 2013. Do expect to be unreasonably cold....than everything else will seem normal! This is going to be a wild mountain biking weekend of fatbike camaraderie. This event require tires greater than 3.0 inches and includes a fabulous ride on the Allegrippis Trail System. Whether we have two feet of snow or an inch of rain....Raystown Lake and Rothrock State Forest are wild places to explore. Come and check-out the huge ice flows first hand. Raystown is 27 miles long and with super steep banks and nasty deep ravine makes for some interesting riding.

The Juniata Theatre presents: Camille A Browns Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration on Thursday, January 24 at the Rosenberger Auditorium, Juniata College. Dancer, choreographer, and interdisciplinary artist, Camille A. Brown "is a storyteller with many tales to tell" (Boston Globe). Originally from Jamaica, Queens, New York, Camille is interested in that space between dance and theater where interdisciplinary work defies category and takes flight. Informed by her music background as a clarinetist, she creates choreography that utilizes musical composition as storytelling- investigating the silent space within the measure. She builds dance vocabulary from a very personal place. Characters are facets of her life, her experience as a lens into the past and the present.
She will share how the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. has influenced her experiences relating to racism, sexism, and body image.

First there was the Negro Problem, a band that rose through the ranks of L.A.'s indie scene in the late '90s and early aughts. Deemed "L.A.'s best band" by the L.A. Weekly in 1992, the unit - propelled by Stew and Heidi Rodewald - recorded three critically acclaimed albums: Post Minstrel Syndrome (1997), Joys & Concerns (1999) and 2002's Welcome Back. The New York Times cited the last as "perhaps the finest collection of songs an American songwriter has come up with this year." When Stew and Heidi began work on Passing Strange, the theater production that went on to become both a Spike Lee-directed movie and Tony Award winner for "Best Book of a Musical," The Negro Problem was put on hold. This past year, however, the band returned to sell out six nights at St Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn, NY, performing primarily new material. Come to the Huntingdon Train Station to rally to save train service in Huntingdon on Friday, March 1 at 10am. Nearly 6,000 people annually utilize the train stop here in Huntingdon Borough. For many, this train stop means access to colleges, medical facilities or visiting loved ones. A change in Federal Law (starting in October 2013) will require the state of Pennsylvania to pay approximately $5.7M to keep the Keystone West Corridor Train, the Pennsylvanian, running. Without action from the PA State Legislators, towns just like our from Pittsburgh to Harrisburg will lose Amtrak service.
